Re: Virginia's Museum of the Confederacy Is Strugg

Kevin,
from what I did understand is that there are alot of different interests involved when it comes to the Museum. Not only the name, but the university want the property too for expansion of it. On top of this - a competitive museum are newly established with a new overall image.

What is important is that location and housing are historical too. They are artifacts as good as a battleflag or a uniform. To move the Museum to a new location is like to move NPS of Shiloh to Montana because one needs the space to housing and industry.

One can`t move history to another place.

What I do understand - the main problem are money.

The major problem are as you pointed out "the image" of the Museum in the public mind, since the demographic map of VA have changed and so it has all over the US. The major problem to this isn`t just that there are fewer Southerners with connection to the CW, but the interest of American history in general.

There is great work to be done in Europe too on the subject of the War for the museums in the US in general - like here in my own country,Norway.

We had over 7.000 men in the War, and we have towns and vallys here with every household with a decendant with a CW history. But, I`ve never seen a an advert for travels or focus on this from a US state touristboard.
