Good point, but remember that after the American Revolution, much of the Upper South also questioned the morality of slavery. Virginia and Maryland pondered emancipation, as the northern states implemented it. The institution was defended for the first few decades of the 19th century as a "necessary evil," a pretty clear acknowledgement that the morality of slavery was dubious, if it was not absolutely immoral. The revitalized defense of slavery in the 1830s reversed this trend to where Southerners began promoting slavery as a "positive good."

By 1860, most people within the United States (and by far most in Europe) questioned the morality of slavery. The US South overall, however, stubbornly defended it as an economic, political, social and moral right.
