Is the United States Better off TODAY

John Gillespie just posted the following,

"Grant and Sherman knew the only way to restore union was to subjugate the south. However unfortunate it was I think we are all the better for it as a United nation."

That raises a question I have often thought about; one which this board has addressed before, but with so many new posters, I thought I would raise it again to see what we might learn from the responses.

Is the United States a stronger nation TODAY for having fought and the CSA having lost the Civil War?

Please note the emphasis on TODAY.
