I say, let's hear it for Oklahoma!
This time around the secession is, once again, going to be on an issue-by-issue basis just like in the 1860s (tariffs, slavery, state's rights, etc.), all of which became the driving issues of the day as a result of federal inaction with one state after another actually seceding.
The difference today will be that instead of being an actual "secession", the "secession" will be a virtual "secession" by state legislative fiat for the same purpose of protecting the state's soverign rights and, in the case of immigration - preservation of the state budget budget against the wasteful effects of Federal inaction.
Following the state lead, cities will soon follow. In north Texas, I just read that one small city just declared English to be the official language for all City Transactions.
So, it seems, secession has been redefined across 140+ years from actual to "virtual." We found out what the Federal response was in the 1860s.
I wonder what the Federal response will be in the 2000's?
