Well, Colonel, the Goatlocker's inner sanctum is usually restricted to Chief Petty Officers and Marine Gunnery Sergeants, but we could probably vote an exception, if you're buying! LOL
The trip to London, KY was pretty much restricted to reuning. My uncle in law, who is only 4 months older than I, is the County Executive Judge for Laurel County. Kind of like what Truman did in his younger days under Pendergast (sp). Lawrence Kuhl is the baby of the family. Their dad was from West Virginia, and settled in Fleming/Neon, Letcher County, as a coal miner. He died of black lung, but lasted quite a while.
THe closest battle site is Camp Wildcat, at Cumberland Gap. The 33rd Indiana fought off Confederates under Zollicofter. This link has a good description of the action in October, 1861. http://www.campwildcatpreservationfoundation.org/history.html
London was settled in 1795, at the intersewction of the Wilderness Road and Boone's trace. There is a stone marker at the corner, on the Courthouse lawn.
Of more recent note, London is the home of the International Chicken Festival. This will mark the 16th year. Sounds funny, but they draw about 200,000 people for the Colonel Sanders' look a like contest the 12 ' frying pan, crafts, and entertainment. Even I have been, once. LOL
Next year's reunion will be in Astor, Florida, with us spilling over into Daytona. My in laws spread from D.C. to Florida, with side branches to Indiana. Enough detail, Colonel? Sorry you asked? LOL Well, back to work. Stan
