You seem to be offering a what-if scenario by suggesting Lincoln should have not taken the oath of office because the nation objected to his victory in 1860.
If Lincoln took your suggestion and resigned after being elected to avoid bloodshed, then what? How would the Executive Branch function? Certainly the Confederacy would object to Seward or Chase replacing Lincoln. Would they have passed a constitutional ammendment banning any Republican from running for President?
