True he may have but it was a different time and the seed of assassination plots were planted by the media when Lincoln first came to Washington D.C. Others at the time felt something could happen. No president had been assassinated before Lincoln, so this was a novel idea. The assassination occured in Washington D.C., not in the old Confederacy, by a non-Southerner. He may have not been killed had he visited the South in 1860 or help start the War.
