Assassination was not a "novel" idea, as many historical leaders---perhaps most famously Caesar---had met their end in such a fashion. Furthermore, at least one president previous to Lincoln actually survived an assassination attempt. Thus, the fact that "no president had been assassinated before Lincoln" was not from a lack of consideration.
