To continue on your train of thought about Confederate symbols and figures in modern society...

I completely agree with you that public discussions of history should include accurate information. It is a tragedy for people to base their beliefs and conclusions about American history on misinformation.

Yet, the tricky thing about many of the examples you and Jamie and others have brought up are that it is about modern Americans defining themselves and modern society. This is tricky because there are many different perceptions and identities within American society. You and some others may see Jefferson Davis or Stonewall Jackson as respectable, honorable, and notable individuals who deserve a place in your community. Others may see those men as white supremacists, traitors, and individuals who do not represent their modern community. Who is right? Or, who is wrong? Even if the historical details about these men can be laid out plainly for everyone to see, how various people today perceive these men in regards to themselves and to their community can be wildly different.

You may believe that people and symbols of the Confederacy should be embraced by modern Americans. Some may believe that they shouldn't. It is a difference of opinion and a difference of perspective. Everyone involved is trying to shape or influence their society or community to reflect what they feel is right or proper...and while historical facts may play a large part, ultimately it comes down to how they "feel."

Anyway, those are some of my thoughts.
