Thanks, Jamie. I could find no mention of the event in the Northern papers of the day that I was able to access. But one source I read this morning claims there is a monument in the local cemetery honoring the 3 white guys who died trying to preserve "white supremacy." The sensibilities of today were clearly not as much in play in that day, on either side. Another source said that blacks the following day were given the chance for a pardon if they would step forward and identify themselves. Those who did, were murdered, according to this account by an author named Rubin.

Wouldn't be surprised if the actual truth of the matter lies somewhere in between both accounts, either to one side or the other, but you won't find me coming down strongly either way. Those were harsh and ugly times and we should all be glad they're gone forever.
