Again I have to ask, what do you mean by "lean one way or the other"? If you look at the historiography of any Civil War subject, you will find numerous schools of thought.
Now, a key aspect of historical writing is a thesis. Published articles (at least academic articles) will often make arguments or interpret a topic a certain way. But these interpretations go all sorts of directions.
Could you give some examples of historians "lean[ing] one way or the other" in a simple "pro-Union" or "pro-Southern" way?
