why can no one actually give examples and explain them?

I think you are a very knowledgeable poster, and I look forward to more of your posts on this board. I feel that I cannot answer your question very well here, since you are focusing on a standard very foreign to modern academic historical study. If you want a list of good books on the sectionalism and the war, I provided one on another post and would be happy to add more. When you clarify that you want examples that are "unbiased" or "even handed," that all depends on what your standards are (for none are completely objective).

There may be a well known dichotomy between "North" and "South" on this board, but I do not believe this board represents the larger or professional historical field. It most often does not represent the historiographical differences among historians I have been exposed to over the years. Jim recently mentioned that relatively few professional historians post on here (at least on the N&V board). So, when considering the trends of established historians, perhaps this board isn't the best model for comparison...ie., what people here disagree about or divide over, isn't exactly what professional historians always disagree about or divide over.
