The Kennedy brothers are not trained historians. I would classify them as writers. Their biographies on their own website explains both their background and their political interests and advocacies:

These men are certainly educated, but apparently their education was not in history.

As for Charles Dew, I have his book and do not know what you mean by it having a "pro-north" take to it. In fact, Dew is a native Southerner who talks about his Southern roots in the introduction. Can you give an example of how his work is "pro-northern"?
