While I must agree with the premise of your first paragraph re Judah Benjamin and Stand Watie, let me defer to Jim Martin to explain why Indians west of the Mississippi were allowed in Confederate service, yet other Indians east of the Mississippi were turned away.

Unless memory betrays me, the Mobile Advertiser and Register ran articles concerning the willingness of Mobile's Creole community to serve and the Confederacy's unwillingness to accept them. A Creole company did organize for state militia service, but never entered CSA service.

I can offer the unconditional discharge of a Creole Confederate from a Mobile company who was released from service because it had been determined that the soldier was of 'mixed blood'.

General Maury would probably be surprised to learn that War Department regulations were ignored in his department. Can you give me the name of a Creole company from Alabama in Confederate service, and explain why you believe it to be composed of Creoles?
