Re: Black Confederates
In Response To: Re: Black Confederates ()

Alan,

I think I know where your going with this. My opinion is that there were many different races integrated into the ranks of the Confederate Army; Blacks included. There were no organized, segregated Black combat units, except combat engineers (pioneer corps), free or slave, in the Confederate Service until 1865.

My research has found black Confederates in combat, prior to 1865, as reported by Union soldiers. These units, I believe turned out to be Louisiana units.

With that in mind, I would search for state regulations on the enlistment of volunteers to see if there was a 'white only' clause. The Confederate Military Regulations do not appear to have a 'white only' clause for volunteers, but there is surely a 'white only' clause for the enlistment of conscripts.

The process of Army recruitment was left up to the individual companies and regiments, mostly while in the field. They were given monies to recruit with, but there was no oversight or recruiting eepartment like there is today. During the beginning of the war, when regiments in the South had time to gather and train, there was a health and age inspection by Confederate authorities of each company. This is where many men were weeded out of the Army. As the war went on, this become more of a luxary than a necessity, and visits like these had to become less and less.

I agree with you, I don't believe there were Black Confederate Infantry, Cavalry, or Artillery Companies or units prior to 1865; local militia yes.
