Actually, in the only case I have come across in my research of the 5th Alabama Infantry Regiment, a man was turned away.....On December 22, 1862, a letter was written to Colonel Hall regarding a Conscript in Company H named John W. Hammonds. His discharge was requested by Captain Thad C. Belcher, because he was deemed to have “negro blood”. He was said to be “a great annoyance to the gallant volunteers of my Company, and I therefore earnestly request that you recommend his immediate removal from the Company.” He was discharged on January 9, 1863.
