Re: Shelby Foote - A Quote worth Quoting

The lop sided results at Knoxville was affected by the weather and terrain. The Confederate troops, including the 18th Ga., assaulted an earthwork protected by a ditch. The sides of the ditch were steep and slick, and it was deep. Once into the ditch, it was almost impossible to climb up the breastworks. Col S.Z. Ruff, then commanding the 18th, was killed. Captain James Lemon, Company A Commander, made it to the top, but was knocked unconsciuos by a rifle butt to the head, and was captured. My two great uncles were there. Stan
