Cump, sounds like your ancestor painted them with a very broad brush. I suppose because there was that landed gentry who were "Gentlemen Farmers" in that they were able to have someone else do the manual labor that would be the perception of some. I guess the truth is that most of the southern folks had plain old jobs. The farmers working their own fields for the most part just as they did in the north with minimum hired help. I can see where a man from Europe would see things that way. My father came here from the old country in the 20th century and felt that way. NOt sure why. FC
