The so called massacre at Fort Pillow is mostly Northern war propaganda. Some time ago I was involved in researching this incident with a couple more people and we found that the USCT never surrendered, began firing after surrender, or were killed by Union fire. We found that some of the testimony of witnesses to be outright lies, alcohol was involved and the citizens of the area had been abused. These facts are really never brought up when Fort Pillow is discussed. Another fact most people seem to just shove aside is the fact Forrest was not found to be guilty. I have no doubt had there be enough evidence to support a massacre; the Yankee army would have had a hanging. Not sure but maybe a search of this site will provide some of these questions and answers.
