The Civil War News & Views Open Discussion Forum

Re: To add to Julius's post re Poison Spring

I agree. Both posts are as far as I can tell accurate and well documented. The kind of stuff I like to see. The problem with those posts is context. They reflect the flawed culture of this forum.

When someone posts something about a Northern atrocity, it's like a feeding frenzy around here. They're like those morons who hang on Limbaugh's every word and chant "ditto, ditto". Almost never is any attempt made to put the disputed Northern actions into context. No charge is too outrageous. Just bumper sticker slogans about the dam Yankees.

But how quickly everyone jumps to explain away questionable Confederate actions. Reams of documentation and long winded posts. VVV even generously added (parenthetically) that most of the atrocities were committed by them Injuns in Tandy's Brigade. That has the added advantage of not only being accurate, it takes even more onus off the white Confeds. It doesn't sting as bad, right?

Now you all certainly have the right to interpret history any way your little old hearts desire, but don't delude yourselves that you're being "fair and accurate". Go back through your posts and look at how often you write "We were defeated, or we won that battle, or we this or we that." Pretty spry for people more than 150 years old.

Your attitude is no different from African-Americans who complain that "we were slaves, so we are entitled to reparations."

I came to this board on the advice of a friend who suggested that I would get a good weekend's entertainment out of it. He was so right. This is all about hysteria, not history.

I've been reading a couple of Mr. Martin's state forums for quite some time. His state forums are the best thing that's happened to Civil War history in a long, long time. Pure gold. But I worry that this News and Views forum is going to get Mr. Martin in trouble for running a daycare without a license.

Don't sell yourself short, Purvis. You ARE worth a full hoot.

Well my work here is done. Back to the reality of working for a living.

Live long and prosper.
