Re: Indian Battles during the Civil War

Not filled with statistics, but a very human story, "The Indian War of 1864", by Captain Eugene F. Ware, tells of a cavalry troop being pulled from the eastern theater and sent to patrol stage and wagon roads, primarily in Kansas and Nebraska. The frustration of chasing up and down the trail with little success is told with great emotion. One young trooper is so depressed by the danger and hardship, with little to show for it, he goes down by the Platte River one evening and kills himself with his service revolver. It is a good read, even with its sadness. Stan
