Yes Stan, they had their problems and they weren't secrets. Grant may well have joined up just to get away from his father or father in law if I remember right. Sherman had his mental demons for sure. In the books and articles I've read on Sherman they pretty much agree that his problem was depression. I'm not so sure he wasn't bipolar. He did seem to take things to extremes and he really went out of his way to prove his critics wrong. He was so sensitive to critism he was almost paranoid.
As much as I deplore what he did on his way to the Atlantic coast, it was effective. It kind of makes me wonder how things may have gone had they been leading the parade early on.
I have to hand it to Sherman for his stand on how the men in his command looked during the victory parade of the Grand Army of the Republic. Just like they did on the field. No bath, No clean clothes.
