Yes, that may well be one of the most perplexing things about the war. Even after the combat ceased, the respect and the friendships continued. Considering the cat and mouse game Sherman and Johnson played, and the show of dignified respect Johnson gave Sherman at the funeral, we could only wish the entire redestruction era had been just as honorable.

Maybe it was because Grant and Sherman had their personal demons driving them to a higher performance level that they succeeded where other Union leaders failed.
