Re: 150 Years Ago..Poor Shots or Has the World Bus

Just got a chance to sit n read this here edition. School's back in session and I really did want to go to bed early but can't sleep til I have my 'news' fix. This stuff is much more interesting than the tv news. Next time the phone rings tonight I'm gonna shoot it.

["The Toilet.- The reputation of Burnett’s preparations has extended to all parts of the United States and Canadas, and they give the utmost satisfaction. The Cocoaine needs only to be tried to pronounce a most superb hair dressing, being wholly unlike anything ever discovered. The other preparations for the complexion, teeth and handkerchief are admirable for their usefulness and delicacy of perfume.- Southern Argus."]

Wonder if Burnett's preparations are still available? What would a hanky need preparation for except maybe to catch a sneeze or tears? Interesting hair dressing ingredient.

A murderer is arrested and awaiting bail? No real surprise there. We still let em bond out then wish we hadn't.

I see there's another slave insurrection in Virginia. Am I the only one who hasn't heard of too many of those events on the continental US? Maybe they were more common than I thought.

Why was there no outcry on the inhumanity in the treatment of the Chinese workers but a whole lot for the Slaves who, while I do believe slavery is an awful thing ( I say this for the lurkers), had food, clothing, shelter and medical care? OMG!!! That sounds like they were on the government dole doesn't it?

I find the Prussian news interesting because it's where my GGrands came from just 26 years from this edition date

It sounds like King Cotton was about to lose his throne. Drought, pest, natural causes and new sources for it. If they weren't anticipating the money crops to bring in top dollar due to a poor growing season, would they hold a war to drive the price up? It did wonders for the steel industry less than 100 years later. I know that sounds flippant, but it is a serious question. Shorten the supply and increase the demand or make it more difficult to obtain. That's gonna drive up the price for sure.

I'm also still hung up on the events overseas. Not only were they dealing with the Ottoman Empire, they had some other pressing problems to keep their attention on their own homefront. Fence sitting to see how the wind blew before committing is understandable, and France didn't say they were aiding any side and neither did England but they did at least keep their ports open for business and wouldn't check too deeply into whose colors a ship was flying. They also weren't investigating the source of the income used to either build vessels in their shipyards or purchase items they had to know darn well were going to be in demand in a country at war and the only way things got to those who were in need was through a blockade.
