I don't know Alan. I'd think it would be more a question of how many and how well armed those doing the shooting at one is as to how they'd decide to arm or not to arm a servant.
Was there a clear policy on those of Indain Blood? Weren't they still considered 'hostile' at that time? Even if they were, were they not given status and allowed to enroll in the ranks of the Confederate or Union Army?
