July, 1863 returns: Cavalry Corps, Maj. Gen. Joseph Wheeler; Forrest's Cavalry Division, Brig. Gen. Nathan B. Forrest; 1st Brigade Brig. Gen. F. C. Armstrong; McDonald's battalion, Maj. Charles McDonald (Forrest's Old Regiment). There was supposed to be four Alabama companies in Forrest original regiment. Major David C. Kelly was one of the Alabama company's captains and would be elected major, second in command to Forrest.
