The Strange 1864 Vote Count...

A strange thing occurred during the 1864 election. Whereas 1/3 of the States did not vote, the total popular vote count was only down by less than 14%- during a war- while a bulk of the men were in the field and hundreds of thousands of voters had already had died.

Total Popular Vote 4,685,029 1860 (All 33 States Voting- South Carolina no popular vote, only 8 electors cast votes [est. missing popular vote about 100,000)
Total Popular Vote 4,031,195 1864 (25 States Voting- Eleven Confederate States not voting)
Total Popular Vote 5,722,394 1868 (Out of 37 States- Virginia, Mississippi and Texas not allowed to vote)

The rise is votes in some states in four years is VERY impressive, especially during a war while hundreds of thousands of troops are in the field and foreign immigration not rising by a great amount. Pennsylvania rose by nearly 100,000 votes!! Tiny Vermont rose by 11,000 and tiny Conn. Increased by 12,000 both besting the powerhouse Illinois who only increased by about 9,000 votes!
