Cobalt blue glass had been used it medicine bottle for years prior to the war. We know that they used candles onboard the Hunley. Why carry anything more complicated to operate than a signal Lantern? Unless a one candle light wouldn't be strong enough to be seen on land. But during WW II a cigarette could be seen for a couple of miles at sea in blackout conditions,
