So Much For Secrets

It has been written by historians that Major Anderson was secretly given orders to surrender the Forts if attacked- and this was only known to him and the White House. This order went out to Anderson, according to the O.R. on December 21, 1860, five days before he would abandoned Fort Moultrie. According to the Charleston Mercury printed on the 21st, 22nd and 25th of December, 1860-- these "secret" orders were a well known fact, and everyone knew it; all Charlestonians had to do was march up to Fort Moultrie and demand its surrender- an act that was never attempted.
