Douglas' had an invested interest in the mind set of the Southern Black. His knowledge was second hand, and maybe not accurate, but he was accepting of the information as true, and believed it could happen. Harriet Tubman is quoted as saying that the slaves she led to freedom did not know they were slaves, and she carried a gun to use against them if they decided to return home.

If this whole debate was, on your part just about Douglas, I wish you would have said something earlier. Douglas' information about the Frederick, Md. report must have come from reading Dr. Lewis H. Steiner's first hand account.
