I find it quite interesting that Gen. Johnston’s son would remain as aide to the President as his father and Davis “ . . . had become increasingly bitter enemies after Davis removed him from command in Atlanta in 1864.” p. 63

Sunday, April 2 Davis orders train to leave 11 PM. Most of the Ordnance Department Officials, led by General Josiah Gorgas, Head of the Ordnance Department left on a separate train at the same time as Davis.

Monday, April 3 Some hours later Joseph Haw, Ordnance Department Chief Clerk was able to jam onto a freight car

Reagan, Postmaster General, George Trenholm Treasury Secretary & his wife, George Davis, Attorney General, Judah P. Benjamin, Secretary of State, Stephen R. Mallory, Secretary of the Navy, Lewis E. Harvie, president of the Richmond & Danville RR, and Dr. Moses Hoge, Presbyterian Minister

Tuesday, April 4 Admiral Ralph Semmes arrived, commissioned a BGen. & given job of directing the Danville defenses Capt. William Parker and his 60 Midshipmen with Confederate Gold depart for Greensboro General Beauregard and staff arrive in the evening.

Sunday, April 9 Lee meets with Grant met at Appomattox Court House. Colonel Burton Harrison put in charge of the evacuation of Danville.

Thurs., April 13 Davis convenes Cabinet Meeting at 10 AM. Davis’ Cavalry escort increased with the arrival of BGen. Dribell and Capt. Given Campbell, Ky. Cav.

Friday, April 14 Depart Greensboro

Sat., April 15 Arrived in High Point and then pushed on to Lexington where they spent the night.

North Carolina Zebulon B. Vance arrives for talks and departs afterwards. Breckinridge

and Regan depart to join in talks with Sherman.

Sun., April 16 Davis party moved to Salisbury

Tues., April 18 Slept in Concord

Wed., April 19 Arrived Charlotte remaining 8 days. Met by Maj. Gen. John Echols. Cavalry under Gen. Basil Duke arrived.

Tuesday, May 2 In Abbeville, Mallory submits his resignation. Davis and his shrinking party leave at 11 PM

Wed., May 3 Arrived Washington, Georgia at 10 AM. The Cabinet was down to three men, Regan, Breckinridge and Benjamin. Benjamin then departs.

Sat., May 6 Davis party reaches Sandersville, Ga. and there decided to break up into 2 groups. Clark, the acting Treasure, would take some of the guards and ride on to Florida to prepare for the arrival of Davis. Now, Davis had only a handful of soldiers, Reagan, Captain Campbell and four aides including Col. Johnston & John Wood.
