George, I found it on Confederate miscellaneous under John Martin on page 75 on fold 3. Yes what you describe is one of many options. Having said that I've only run across it perhaps twice in several hundred records. It's not a high percentage option but an option none the less. John Martin deserted the 3rd Maryland Cavalry within weeks after enlisting thus giving me the impression that he may have given false information to the Union clerks. It's just way to early to tell at this point. It's also possible his name was not even John Martin as I've ran across that before too. It's also possible that he used his middle name while in the Confederate Army and was not listed as John. Just a lot of different options.
