Re: 10th/19th S.C. - Casualty List for Murfreesbor

Lee White's superb letter was of great interest. It is rare to get a letter so full of details. I was aprticularly struck by Walker's reference to the Cockfields, father and son, lying dead together. As a matter of interest only, the Cockfield Family came, and still comes from, the small area about Lake City, now in lower Florence County, S.C. At the time, that area would have been along the line of Williamsburg and Marion Districts. The entire region is known as the Pee Dee, and sadly when they marched off to war they were not destined to return. Again, a superlative CW letter!!

One other matter of potential research interest. Several months ago, I located a series of five newspaper articles in the Abbeville Press and Banner, written in the early 1930's, which featured the five colonels who lived along Main Street in the little town of Abbeville. I made copies and sent them to the Old Edgefield District Genealogfical Society, since several of them had connections to Edgefield. I did not keep copies. However, one of them included a biographical sketch of Colonel Lythgoe. He was born in Aiken, in what was then Edgefield District, the son of an Englishman who had migrated to S.S.; he married and moved to Abbeville as a young man. I will try to get you a copy of the sketch. It contains a good deal of personal information on him, and describes his death wound in much the same manner as does Walker's account. He died of either the effects of the wound, or the subsequent amputation of the leg, within twenty-four hours (that night, if I recall).
