South Carolina Medical College

South Carolina Medical College, founded in the 1820's, was one of the premier medical schools in the nation in the years immediately preceding the War. It also educated a large number of young doctors, graduating in the class of 1858, 82 alumni, in 1859, 74; in 1860,114; and in 1861, 94. Classes were suspended in March, 1861, and did not resume until November, 1865, and the period of meidcal education seems to have been drastically shortened. The first post-war class, that of 1866, only gruaduated 13 doctors. As a measure of the impoverished condition of South Carolina, only one class through 1899 had as many as 30 graduates, that of 1881, and most had substantially less. For instance, the Reconstruction class of 1872 graduated only two doctors, and the follwing Class of 1873 only 4. The effect of this shortage of trained doctors must have ahd a terrible effect upon the health of the citizens of the State.

From the history of the Meical College, I copy the membvers of the Class of 1858. Many, if not most of these young men, found themselves in Confederate service in three years, many in positions of substantial responsibility. The 1858 graduating physicians were:
C. B. Addison, D. W. Barton, W. H. Battle, Jr., R. S. Beckham, J. L. Beckett, H. D. Bedon, R. C. Bethea [Robert C. Bethea, of Marion District, moved to Alabama, then to Mississppi; served in Mississippi unit as captain, then probably in Hampton Legion as private; became Methodist minister in Mississippi postwar], S. J. Blackwell, J. R. Boulware [James Richmond Boulware, later assistant surgeon of the 5 S.C., from Chester District], R. J. Brown, G. N. Bull, B. W. Bush, J. M. Butler, James Cook, C. T. Coleman,

J. F. Daniel, R. E. Dennis, W. P. Dowling [Beaufort District], Walter Duffy, J. M. Dulin, Wilfred Dupont [Beaufort District], T. O. Elliott, W. H. Evans, W. T. Field [William Thomas Field, of Pickens Distrtic, farmer; did not practice medicine; 1 LT K/Hampton Legion; member S.C. Senate and 1895 Constitutional Convention]H. W. Freeman, F. J. Geiger, J. J. Goodwyn [Richland District], J. M. Griffin,

A. W. Hamer [Marlboro District], W. R. Hardman, D. Henagan, D. L. Hildebrand, J. C. Hill, W. F. Hopkins, A. L. Jackson, W. S. Johnson, W. H. Jones, E. H. Kellers, W. L. Ledbetter, A. M. Loryea, R. D. McCravey, J. A. McDougald, A. M. McKay, J. B. Mays, J. M. Meggett, B. W. Moore, W. H. Moore [of Gillisonville ?], F. J. Moses [Franklin J. Moses, Scalawag Lieutenant Governor of S.C. during Reconstruction; Sumter District], G. W. Muse,

A. H. Nabers, A. N. Nash, W. T. Neely [York District], F. Marion Nye [only one listed with a Christian name], F. L. Parker [Francis LeJau Parker, of Charleston District, surgeon Hampton Legion; President S.C. Medical Assn. postwar; taught surgery at Medical Colelge postwar], J. M. Payne, B. F. Peeples, I. A. Perry, P. S. Postell [Charleston District], J. H. Powe, J. F. Presley, W. J. Pringle, P. E. Prior, A. Redmon, T. J. Ryan,

W. H. Sanders, J. A. Shelby, L. S. Smith, J. W. Spearman, W. C. Stewart, B. W. Taylor [Benjamin Walter Taylor, Assistant Surgeon, Hampton legion, Surgeon 2 S.C. CAV, became medical director of Cavalry Corps of Army of Northern Virginia; prominent physician in Columbia postwar, and president of S. C. Medical Assn], W. H. Thomasson, W. K. Turner,

J. M. Verdier, J. P. Wall, S. C. Webster, M. Wedgworth, J. M. Westmoreland [Spartanburg District], S. T. Williamson, W. H. Wright, W. H. Wyman, R. E. V. Yates, R. M. Young.

I am confident that a number of these men were from states other than South Carolian, and certainly many practiced elsewhere postwar, if they survived the war. Can anyoone identify some of these men as having served in the Conbfederate army or navy?
