Lee:

When you get to SCMC for class of 1861 you will find Robert Press Smith, Jr., Grad. Citadel 1859, Capt. Co E. 1st S.C. Inf. (Regs). He was the 1st county physician here.
He rests with his father in the rural cemetery, who was RPS,Sr. Capt. QM 27th S.C. Inf. A few feet away is Lt. Col. John G. Pressley, C.O, 25th S.C. Inf. who wrote highly of both men in his war journal (see SHSP). He relieved Jr at Fort Wagner and he gave most of his horses to Sr. for transport when their brigade (under Hagood) went to VA. The CSA folks here were of course quite close to each other after the war both in business and socially. Pressley and RPS Jr. were partners in real estate ventures. This was a pro CSA town in the war and the only county (Sonoma) in Calif. that did not vote for Lincoln in 1864. Our newspaper was run by a man from VA and it was almost shut down by the state during the war like 6 others were. The next town south was Union and the two papers fought all doing the war. The local paper was very disrepectful about Lincoln's death and the other town sent their militia to attack this town. They stopped for beer ( half way and a hot day and had marched 12 miles) at a stage stop and then went no further. So ended the Battle of Santa Rosa.
Grant visited there for a speech after the war. Stage stop still open.
