Re: 10th SC & 19th SC at Murfreesboro

There is a book called Happy Heritage now published by Three Rivers Historical Society in Hemmingway SC. The book is about $35.00. This book contains letters written by Capt James Lee of the SC 10th Infantry co. H / I. The book was published in the 1940's by a descendent of the Lee Family. The letters are an exchange between James Lee, his father and brother in which he is describing his tour through Tenn. Capt Lee also gives in detail Manigault's charge on Nolensville Pike and the capture of a Yankee battery. He mentions the captured guns were presented to the 10th and 19th for their bravery and skill on the battlefield and that these guns were sent to Beaugard in Charleston with names of dead officers engraved. One cannon was engraved with the name of Capt. John Reuben Nettles of Co. H
They are many interesing facts about the battle and Army life that I have never read before in any history detailing the battle. One fact he mention which was interesting was that his father had sent him a servant named Dave. Being from the Pee Dee section of South Carolina Dave was about to freeze to death in Tenn. Dave asked Capt Lee could he build a mud chimmney on the tent for a fireplace. Capt Lee let him build the chimmney and as he was doing this soldiers came by and laughed and remarked they wanted to be there when the tent goes up in flames. According to Capt Lee the chimmney worked great and all along the hill side now are tents with mud chimmneys. So if you see this fact mentioned again it was Dave's idea, a slave from SC.
Capt Lee also details Braggs new way of dealing with soldiers who deserted or ran. You can tell by his writing he did not agree with harshness,it upset him but what could he do.
The book also contains a photograph of the bullet ridden and bloody flag carried by his brother in law Cleveland Cockfield who was shot dead during the charge on Nolensville Pike.
