James I believe you are correct. Contrary to popular 21st century wisdom not all slaves were on the plantation. And among those who were were brick makers, masons, coopers, weavers, etc. Many had skilled jobs not the least of which were steveadors. This made them ideally suited for the heavy Artillery. Their knowlege of levers, pullies, and lifting huge loads would have been highly valued.
