Re: Sullivan County Home Guards

Al,

I would think they simply " disbanded and went home " at news of the surrender of Lee in Virginia and Johnson in North Carolina. Ancestors of mine that served in this unit traveled as far as Chattanooga and as near as Jonesboro to formerly surrender and " take the oath " during May-June 1865. I noticed one thing you may be interested in. There is a T.M. Shipley listed in Co. E. ( Sullivan County ) 61st Tenn Mtd. Inf. could this be Tolbert ? The 60th 61st, and 62nd Regiments were made up of East Tennessee men. Many were captured at " Big Black River Bridge " in Mississippi in May, 1863. Those that made it back to rebel lines were later paroled at the surrender of Vicksburg. Many who remained loyal to the Confederacy and didn't want to abandon their families again ( East Tenn was a dangerous place during those times !!! ) They joined the " reserves " that way the could still serve and stay near their families. Hope I could help. Good luck in you're search and good for you in teaching and encouraging Tolbert's 3rd great-grandson !!!!

Glenn
