The Tennessee in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Cocke County and Eisenhours and Easterlys

Thank you for the response. It is interesting that a number of men of the 60th, 61st, and 62nd Tennessee Infantry Regiments ended the war in Union units. Apparently, men were allowed to 'volunteer' for these units just before the draft was reinstated in East Tennessee in Autumn 1862, then these units were almost immediately shipped from the mountains of East Tennessee to Vicksburg. The 62nd actually played a role in repelling Sherman at Chickasaw Bluff. But the stay in Mississippi appears to have been an unhappy time for the units. At Big Black River, the three regiments were fresh, having not participated at Champion's Hill the previous day, but collapsed quickly.

My gggg grandfather Phillip Easterly was in his late 40s in the 1860 census, so he probably did not serve. His two sons of military age still living with him, Thomas and Abraham, appear to have served in the 4th and 8th Tennessee.
