I have found it interesting that books on the Vicksburg campaign often miss this element (Vaughn's Brigade's composition)of the Big Black River fight. It seems more often than not, the quick Union victory is credited to Lawler's Brigade finding some low ground to approach, without mention of the Unionist sentiments of much of the defending force.
Thank you for your comments. I would be interested in further information concerning communications between Johnson, Brownlow, et. al. and Vaughn's men prior to the action.
