Matt:

Your description of the Shilo battle is very good. Two of my ancestors were in the 5th Tennessee Infantry regiment. One died at Shiloh and is buried there, the other went on to Corinth and lost his life in a troop train crash. They were brothers. They were with Venable when Prentiss surrendered with 2000 troops at the Hornets Nest. Ironically, a cousin in the reeenforcements from Buell was a Sergeant in an Ohio infantry regiment and fought against his cousins in the 12th tennessee Infantry on later battlefields all the way to the nashville Campaign. The one that died at Shiloh was KIA on the first day of battle. They both made wills for their parents on the timne of their enlistments in Tennessee, they were from Kentucky.
