Confederate Military Records
In Response To: Confederate Military Records ()

Thank you to all those who replied to this thread. The consensus seems to be that even if the original records are at NARA, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to view those originals.

Therefore, may I please request opinions on my specific problem?

I have a record card for a member of the 19th Tennessee Regiment covering his period of service from 30 June 1863 through 1 November 1863. He was paid on 19 November 1864 (sic) by M B Pilcher and the entry is copied from page 605 of the original file. However, the same soldier was paid on 13 February 1864 for the period from 1 November 1863 through 31 December 1863, also by M B Pilcher. This was copied from page 608 of the same file, and by the same copyist. All dates are clear, so there is no ambiguity on the copied record card.

Does everyone agree that, from the evidence, the actual date for the first payment is more likely to be 19 November 1863, not 1864?
Does anyone have evidence to support other payments made on 19 November 1863 by M B Pilcher for the July - October 1863 period, from the record cards of other soldiers?
How common are transcription errors in the creation of the record cards?
