Alan,

Moody Young Co. I 6th TN Inf. has only one muster card. This has puzzled me for years. He died in Feb 1898 & never applied for a pension, nor did his widow who died in Jan. 1906.

There are a number of men in this company who have only this one card dated Aug 12 1861 New Madrid MO. The date the 6th was accepted for Confederate service. Other men in the company have many cards.

There is no clue as to the rest of their service for the men in this company who have just that single card dated Aug 1861 at New Madrid.

The only other reference to Moody Youngs service is from the 1890 veterans census. This states he served until Dec. 1864.

I'm not sure if I can draw any conclusions from this sparse info. Either he served only a short time (Aug 1861), or the veteran census is correct & his service record is incomplete. Not sure which to believe.

Most men in this company enlisted on May 23 1861, yet the first record for them is the Aug. 1861 New Madrid card. No records exist from May 1861 to Aug. 1861 ?

Moody's brother Allen H. Young served in the same company & was KIA at Shiloh. He has two cards, the Aug 1861 card & then no other card until the Jan-May 1862 muster roll which show him as dead. He has no cards to cover his service between Aug. 1861 & the Jan-May 1862 card, yet we know he was present because he died at Shiloh. Other men in the company has cards to cover this time period. Confusing !
