Darron --

I'm sorry this was so difficult to resolve. The first hint answering one of your questions appears at the bottom of the one card in Moody Young's service file. Capt. James M. Collingsworth's Company was accepted in service of the State of Tennessee on May 23, 1861, Camp Fair, Jackson TN. The regiment was turned over to Confederate service at New Madrid MO on Aug. 12, 1861. Other than original rolls, there usually are no other rolls for the brief period different commands were under state authority. If any records survived for that period (May 23rd until Aug. 12, 1861), Tennessee State Archives should have them.

Second, as I mentioned earlier, the regimental and company rolls will provide a guide to the number and type of rolls available. There are 146 microfilm images for these, including a dozen rolls for Company "I". Next you will notice that the earliest roll after the regiment entered Confederate service covers the period Jan. 1 through May 1, 1862. That leaves a gap betwen Aug. 12 and Dec. 31, 1861. Since Moody Young appears on none of the other rolls for 1862 and 1863, the only conclusion can be that this man was removed from the company book before Jan. 1, 1862.

If you could examine the roll for May 1, 1862, and compare it to the original roster, a number of things would be evident. Many names would be missing from the May roll with no explanation as to why they were removed, as in the case of Moody Young. You would also see several new recruits added to the roll. If a roll for Oct. 31st or Dec. 31st existed, we would have answer to most of these questions.

I see nothing that suggest that Moody Young ever returned to service with this company. However, he can be found with Co. "A", 9th Tennessee Regiment as M. F. Young on the roll for Jan. 1 - May 1, 1862. This record has enlistment information identical to that of Moody Young in the 6th Tennessee. The facts as stated are enlisted for twelve months service by A. W. Campbell on May 23, 1861. The site of enlistment is given as Jackson TN, which I would venture to guess is the same location as Camp Fair.

The 6th and 9th Tennessee Regiments belonged to the same brigade throughout the war. I would have to suppose that Moody Young obtained a transfer to the 9th Tennessee Regiment sometime during the fall of 1861. He is listed as absent at home without leave, and removed from the roll as a deserter thereafter.

Perhaps he later joined a Confederate cavalry command raised in West Tennessee.
