My father was Edwin W. Herron, son of Alfred W. Herron and grandson of William Stewart Herron. I've been following your thread with interest and would love to know more about him too. My cousin Elinor Morrison and my cousin Kathy Nickerson may have more info, although it sounds like you have spoken with Kathy. Elinor and our Uncle Webb had a picture of WM.S - long beard as he refused to cut it after the surrender, as did the rest of Forrest's troop so the story goes. Our cousin Dr. John Tate Herron of Montana is supposed to be quite an expert on him. And you are right - the Herrons are a lovely family - my Dad was a career naval officer who grew up in Vinita OK - his Dad was a Doctor and a lovely southern gentleman. His mother "Lula" Harris Herron was very proud of her FFV roots - she had Venables and Poindexters in her ancestry. My Dad went to the Naval Academy in the 1920's and retired as a Rear Admiral in 1957. I'm one of 5 daughters, now in my early seventies. My Dad was the skipper of a destroyer escort in Pearl Harbor in Dec. 1941 - I was a baby at the time but my older sister remembers the smoke in the distance. His ship was luckily not damaged, but we have the family memories of a very scary time! I live in New Orleans so would be very interested if anyone can find out things about William Tate Herron and the possibility of him being at the battle of New Orleans. I looked at the records at the battlefield and just remember there were lots of Herrons!
