Re: Bourland & Northern Frontier

Pvt. Daniel S. Howell, Capt. James S. Moore's Company (Co. H), Col. James G. Bourland's Frontier Regiment, C.S.A. There was no one named Howell in Capt. J.C. Smith's Company, Fannin-Hunt County, 14th Brigade, T.S.T.

West Texas Historical Quarterly:
"Along The Texas Frontier During the Civil War" (Oct. 1937)

September 3,1864.
On Bean's Creek in southeast Jack County some men of Moore's Company were accused of getting into a gunfight with deserters who were living amidst civilians. Bourland believed that W.C. (William Cocke) Young was mistaknenly killed by an assissin looking for him, which hardened his resolve to rid the brush of of deserters.

Pvt.D.S.Howell dictated an article in 1923 which appeared in the West Texas Historical Association Year Book as follows: "There was a famous outlaw named Brumley who lived 12 miles east of Jacksboro. We were in the Jacksboro area and sent a sergeant with 11 men after Brumley. They camped near the house owned by Mr.Hancock and approached early in the morning to arrest Brumley. After a shoot out, Pvt. Alex Coker of Bourland's Regiment, Brumley, and Mr.Hancock lay dead. All of the men who fired on the house were court-martialed and aquitted" Pvt.D.S. Howell was a member of a detachment who were hunting deserters, Union sympathsizers and draft evaders.

Rupert N. Richardson (1891-1988) was one of the founders of the "West Texas Historical Quarterly" and published the article.

Could this D.S. Howell be the man?
