Pvt D.S. Howell, Col. Bourland and Col. Townes

Jim Evans,

Below is a paragraph from Rupert Richardson's 1923 interview of David Smart Howell (1846-1927), who served two hitches for the Confederate cause:

1) Col. Gideon] Smith’s Second Cavalry Regiment of the Fourth Cavalry Brigade commanded by Col. N.W. Towne in J.E. Slaughter’s Second Divison of Texas from ca. July 1863 until Feb 1864. (see ORsIv26/2[S#42]p514 and ORsIv34/2[S#62]p904 below)

2)Capt. James S. Moore's Co. of Bourland's Regt. from ca. Feb 1864 until after Mar 1865.

"Finally I went into the army for Dr. J[ohn] C. Smith. It was July or August, 1863. Smith paid me twenty dollars a month, furnished me a horse, saddle, rifle and entire outfit all of the best. I was sworn in at Camp Lane [probably Bowie County, maybe Camp Lane Pecan, Fannin County], on Red River. I might add that no one questioned the regularity of my enlistment. Later on in the war, substitutes were questioned closely to determine whether or not they had ever enlisted before. This was to prevent “bounty-jumping” and also to prevent men serving for others who ought, under the law, be serving for themselves. But they took me without question and seemed glad enough to get me. I was sworn in at the colonels headquarters, [Col. Gideon] Smith’s Second Cavalry Regiment, Fourth Cavalry Brigade commanded by Col. N.W. Towne, J.E. Slaughter’s Second Divison of Texas."
