For other vets involved it's best to start at the top. President McKinley served from Ohio, and beyond wanting to smoth things over with his former adversaries he admired these men as talented officers and relied on their battlefield experience. Of course there were more Union vets serving in all parts of the war. for the securing of the Philippenes there were several: the Navy's commander in the Pacific George Dewey had served under Farragut in the war, and he had contact with General Wesley Merritt and supported some of his actions in the Philippenes. Another Army officer in the Philippenes was General Arthur McArthur, whose son would gain noteriety in his own right. A side point to the Civil War vets service: while serving as an intern at the Oklahoma State Archives I saw a poem written from the point of view of a Confederate vet. I don't have a copy to place here but the gist of it is the old soldier is proud that he served in the Confederacy, and convesely is willing to take up arms against the enemy of the United States.
