Many men from Collin County enlisted in the 6th Texas Cavalry in Dallas,Texas. Pvt. Collin Joseph McKinney enlisted in the 6th Texas Cavalry. His father was the gentleman who Collin County and McKinney Texas was named.

Col. B.Warren Stone raised the 6th Texas Cavalry in Dallas Texas. The necleus of the regiment was Capt.Thomas H.H.Bowen's Mantua Company of Collin County Texas Militia, organized on June 8, 1861. In September 10,1861, Capt.Bowen's Company joined Col. Stone's 6th Mounted Regiment, Collin County, 15th Brigade, Texas State Troops. The regiment was immediatedly called into Confederate service at Dallas.

James Nolan, pvt., age 20, enlisted in Capt. Bowen's Co. D, Col.B. Warren Stone's 6th Texas Cavalry Regiment, C.S.A. on September 10, 1861.
