A follow up to my so far unfruitful research on John Edward Bates ....... i cannot ascertain what units he served with after his exchange in Virgina, from 1863 on.

He was apparently captured a second time (by envelopment on the Battle Field at Franklin Tennessee, November 30, 1864),

sent north to Ohio and that is where the POW photo was made (winter 1864-64)
